Currently Craving: Still Chocolate
So last week it was obvious to max and to me that hiding this pregnancy from my yoga students really wasn't going to be a possibility any more. i mean, i do wear tight little outfits when i go there, hard to hide it when you've been out drinking all night or say, you've got another human inside of you. So since last monday i've been sharing the news with all of my classes.
this has been an interesting experience. in the first class, which is just a small group i teach at a school. one of the teachers started it by saying SHE was pregnant and i said that was interesting because so am i. they've reassured me i don't actually Look pregnant. (not so sure)
then on to one of my studio classes. the students first offered congrats and then one of the men asked how i was feeling (which i thought was pretty considerate). another of the men commented that he noticed a little something different around my belly. but of course wouldn't say anything.
then i started getting smart, i decided to use the pregnancy as a teaching tool. as a segue into the theme for the class for the evening. so i'd say... yeah i'm pregnant and so my brain is down 7% so i'm doing all these crazy things like trying to brush my teeth and my hair at the same time. and knowing i'm in this state forces me to be MINDFUL. (look at that excellent use of life experience to teach about yoga)
in the first class i tried this tactic in they first burst into applause that i am pregnant. then they settled in and pretty much seemed to forget about it and get on task for the class.
in the next class one of the students reassured me that i didn't actually look pregnant (like it would be so bad to look pregnant) but she said after the previous class she'd been wondering because i hadn't been twisting and had done a lot less demonstrating. hmmmm.....
then last night again all the students were very congratulatory. after i told the brain shrinking by 7% bit one of the men said 'that explains a lot!' but then they settled in and got to work.
mostly people want to know if we will find out the sex of the baby and what our due date is. one student HIGHLY recommended prenatal yoga and was ready to give me all the info until i told her i was about to sign up already.
all in all a pretty good experience. i'm not always so ready to share the intimate details of my life with my students, maybe that's leftover from therapist days, but this time it seems to have gone ok so far. i mean, eventually there just isn't any hiding it anyway. hopefully people will stay respectful and not ask too many questions but i guess i just have to be prepared for anything.
on an interesting side note.... a few weeks ago i dreamed that i gave birth to the baby (a girl) and immediately dressed her, put her on a yoga mat, and then walked up to the front of the room and started teaching. quick turn around.
