So, Max has an iPhone. it's a little busted from riding around in his pocket all the time, but he does have an iPhone. and i don't know if you know the iPhone, but it has this feature where you can download (right out of the AIR!) all sorts of applications.. or "apps" for short. you just go to the page and download whatever you want. some are free and some you have to pay for. the apps are very important things you might need at any moment... like, um, the iFlute, the MORE COWBELL app, blackjack, poker... and any number of things to fill your time. shazam is one of our favorites as you can hold the phone in the air and it will pick up the music that is playing then tell you the name of the song and artist. nice.
as ridiculous as it all seems, on this last trip we actually found a very useful app. at max's grandparents house sabine was in an upstairs bedroom which is pretty far from the family room, definitely out of earshot. they don't have a baby monitor.. and neither do we.
iPhone app to the rescue! for a small fee max downloaded the iPhone baby monitor. we put his phone on monitor and set it in the room with sleeping baby. then left the room, taking my phone with us. any time his phone picked up a noise in the room it called my phone. it was just sensitive enough not to call for every sigh and cough but would call if she started to truly cry. pretty sweet. and, it really worked. we only got to use it for one nap because by the time i got her to sleep every night i just stayed in bed, but it was still pretty cool.
and i'm really not a gaget person, but using the iPhone was quite useful. and it saved us from having to spend money to buy a monitor, and saved us from having to own a big plastic baby monitor that will eventually end up in a landfill (i know, the phone will too and it's probably worse for the environment, but at least it serves more than one purpose). and we had piece of mind to be able to leave her out of earshot.
i think it could be pretty fun. if we wanted to we could put my mom's phone on for the iPhone to call and SHE could monitor the baby from out of town. oh the things they think of!

What we've been up to.....
In the last two weeks we've been keeping busy with getting ready for babe....
We received babe's rocker in the mail and got it set up in her room, with a sock monkey to keep it company until she is born

i've made about 10 birth affirmation signs ... need to make one more... and i made some others of the hindu gods and goddesses that could inspire me during labor

we've been watching this balloon deflate. it was given to me by my bookgroup at the end of AUGUST. max is convinced it will deflate when babe arrives. so far it's still holding strong!

We bought babe a bookshelf and arranged her books and toys on it. sorry no full nursery pics yet because it isn't done AND it's full of birth supplies which aren't all that attractive.

We put up halloween decorations
Tyco at the door. he's just hanging out with us.
Last saturday we drove to ashland for the pumpkin patch. it was fun but will be better next year when we actually take the hayride out into the patch. this year we bought a pumpkin...
.. and Mums
Max configured the car seat so that it is set for newborn instead of big cousin size where it was set previously. and we got the base installed in my car.
We put one of Tyco's beds outside since it has been cool and dry.

we've watched tyco sleep....
We took some artistic shots of my belly. this is the only one i'll share with the full internet.

AND i've been quilting... this one for friends of mine.

This one for Babe

two others in the works and one on the brain....
we've also organized all of our glassware into the shelves in our kitchen to clear shelves in our living room for kid stuff, we've learned a lot about the habits of 'black cat' and 'grey cat' who roam the neighborhood and love our front porch, we've cleaned, today i dusted all of the windows (8 of them) in our bedroom and the baseboards, i spent an entire day creating birth art with a friend of mine, then i designed printed and copied birth invitations for nancy, max, and katie, we've watched hours of Grey's anatomy on dvd and are burning through netflix, and we've even watched presidential and vice presidential debates, we've gone out to eat a lot more than normal, cooked in a lot more than normal, and gone to see plenty of movies. i still practice yoga and meditation, max hits the gym and sends out camera gear, we got the tub ready, we have washed and organized anything that will touch babe's skin in the next 6 months. oh and max got a new (old) car. other than that we're just walking tyco around the block and waiting for this baby to decide she's ready to be born.

The Horse Trough
Currently Craving: Sidewalk Cafe for dinner
We have been busy bees in the last few days getting ready for Babe. essentially most everything is done. some odds and ends could still stand to be taken care of, but if she was born right now, we'd be in good shape.
Today max was my hero yet again by cleaning out the birth tub. as i said it really is a horse trough that has been converted into a birthing tub which actually makes sense. it's probably cheaper this way and is definitely meant to hold water. this afternoon in the nice october weather (babe, get here so you can enjoy it!) max dragged it out of his car and into the yard where he first sprayed it down then bleached it out. after it dried he dragged it into the dining room where it will stay until time to move it upstairs. Tyco at first couldn't believe what was going on, and then couldn't be more disinterested. oh how his world is going to change.....

Satisfaction
There is something supremely satisfying about cleaning the house. not that i would ever advertise myself as particularly good or meticulous about it. but at this point in my pregnancy i feel like i see every single speck of dirt and every place where things are just slightly out of alignment with the natural order of things. and this morning, though i didn't feel particularly energized when i started, the cleaning process was exceptionally rewarding. i didn't go crazy or deep clean, (not like wednesday when i found myself in the basement organizing wrapping paper for an hour) i just took my time and made sure the house was neat with clean bathrooms and floors. and now... sigh it just feels better.
just in time for mom to arrive.

Hurricane and Nesting
Currently Craving: Pregnancy Tea
This weekend was one of those rare weekends when both max and i were in town and we didn't have company or any real plans. that doesn't happen very often in our life so we have to celebrate it when it does. This weekend richmond was also hit with the remnants of tropical storm hanna. essentially hours of straight downpour rains that would keep any sane normal people inside... especially those who are nearly 8 months pregnant. but whoever said we were sane and normal?
and so, in the middle of it all... serious deluge... max decides it is the perfect time to run some errands, and as i've holed up in the house most of the week i totally agree with him. we have three stops. first is target to return some duplicates and to pick up a pack and play since eva and david still need theirs. second is petsmart because tyco is absolutely out of food and must be starving by now. and third is a rug store on broad street.. max is convinced babe needs a new rug in her room.
just before setting out i grab an umbrella but figure i'll barely need it... we'll just run to the stores. Turns out it's really hard to RUN when you're as pregnant as i am. who knew? instead i kind of waddle my way to target under the tiny umbrella that isn't doing much to keep me dry. we do however make it through the things we need to do. (gigi can rest easy that we now own crib sheets). then it's back out into the weather. at this point we have a cart full of items and max says he's just going to book it to the truck... pack and play in his arms. so he's off and running, completely drenched in his t-shirt and shorts. and i'm stuck to waddle to the truck with the little bags in my arms.
next stop petsmart i don't even bother to get out. and by the time max gets back he's even more drenched and now COLD from all the water. we start to make our way up broad street and can barely see through the windshield. at this point i'm starting to feel how annoyed max is with being wet and cold. and i'm starting to fear for my own safety as the rain is continuing and all the "other" drivers are driving so crazy. luckily he read my mind and asked if i really wanted to go shopping for rugs right then. NO WAY!
on the way onto the interstate we see a tree fall down and cross one of the exit ramps ( or max sees it, i was totally engrossed in my hot chocolate). and we know we've made the best decision by heading for home.
so no rug yet. babe's room is still a complete work in progress. and at this point i don't recommend going out for a run in a deluge while 8 months pregnant. but i'm just glad i got max all to myself for a few days before he takes off for ohio tomorrow. whew!

Cars
Currently Craving: Chocolate Almond Energy Bites from Ellwood's
so i guess it's Out with the Old

and In with the New

Last week we made the swap from my 03 corolla with 123K miles on it to the 08 outback with 8 miles on it.
i have some mixed emotions. i really loved my corolla. it was my first real car and i paid it off eventually and i drove the heck out of it as i commuted back and forth 100 miles a day for almost two years. and it was totally reliable, just the right size and GREAT for gas mileage. BUT as with everything, things must change when a baby comes along.
American babies require a lot of stuff. and hauling all that stuff requires a vehicle that can manage it. both of those statements make me irritated and annoyed. why does my baby have to have all this stuff? why do i have to get a bigger car just because i have a baby? in europe, people drive really small cars and their babies seem to do just fine. unfortunately our american life isn't really set up to walk many places so instead i'll bundle my errands... which means having enough room to bring back groceries and have a stroller in the car. i don't know. we just tried to be as eco-friendly as possible when making this shift.
so we went with the subaru outback. it's kind of the neighborhood car here where we live. and it's also the ultimate yoga teacher/mom car. i know LOTS of yoga teachers with this car. i guess it's good for hauling props and things. so guess i liked this car because of all the subliminal messages from the neighbors and yoga teachers. 'this car is cool' they said.
one of the real reasons i felt that i needed to step it up from the corolla was the concern about getting Babe in and out all the time. the back seat has a lot more space and the lift off the street is a bit higher so i won't be killing my back every time we go in and out. we also figure at times there will be an adult and the baby seat in the back and the corolla wouldn't really handle that and then if we wanted to add tyco to the mix... he doesn't go into a car trunk. in the outback... to haul tyco and Babe on a long trip we'd be ok. we could pack tyco in the back with a gate guard. Babe and an adult or luggage in the center seat and still enough space for the driver in the front seat. all done without having to drive an SUV and we'd get better gas milage. and the trunk of the station wagon is much easier to manage for getting groceries, stroller, dog, stuff into and out of than the deep trunk of the corolla. so we made the leap.
balancing my desire to be as green as possible and to be as comfortable and make life as easy as possible on us without going over the top is definitely a challenge. so i guess we just make the best choices when we can. and as far as i can tell subaru is a very good company, the car was made in the US, and it should hold its value and be very reliable for years so i won't expect to do this again in two years.
so far i'm not totally attached to the outback but i'm getting to love her more and more. and now that i know how to drive her without killing the engine (oops!) i think we're on the right track.

Two months to go
Currently Craving: MMMmm more gelato from up the street
we have reached the two month mark. i am officially seven months pregnant much to the surprise of anyone i meet. i think they expect me to say i'm about 5 months. usually the second question after how far along are you is 'first baby?' well, obviously. next time i'll be hanging out everywhere i suppose.
at this point we still have a lot on our to do list to get ready. some are small things like move the towels out of the closet in Babe's room to the bathroom and some are big things like find a pediatrician. (we really need to get on that). but we have a start on setting up her bedroom and yesterday i washed all the clothes we have for her already. turns out we have a lot of onsies.
so the nesting thing is starting to come upon me. first, with beginning to set up a nursery for Babe we have to clean out her closet which started a process of thinning down the amount of bed sheets we have. i decided to offer one set to my sister... that then prompted me to look at a lot of my non-maternity clothing and wonder if it is something i will ever wear again. what i've learned while pregnant is that i can get by and be quite happy with a lot fewer clothes in my closet than i seem to think. mainly i just need some great yoga clothes and a few things to get me back and forth and an outfit or two for going out or dressing up and i'm good. time to thin down the clothes and maybe, just maybe it's time to get rid of things i've had since (gasp!) high school.
so yesterday started the going through my own closets and boxes holding clothes and trying to be very honest with myself about whether i was really going to wear any of it again. i produced a big bag of clothes for liz to look through and then a smaller one of things i know she won't want that will go to goodwill. then again today i started with going through all my shoes... i'm terrible about shoes. it's not like i have tons of really cute pairs or anything like that. my shoes are pretty boring and i NEVER get rid of them. so today i went through and made yet another goodwill bag, keeping only shoes that i really wear. that led me into cleaning out underneath the bathroom sink and that only stopped because max came home and we decided to have lunch.
when i was in ohio my yoga teacher, ann, was saying that she used to change careers and do amazing things like live on safari in africa all the time. one of her friends decided to quit a job after 20 years and called and asked ann: how do you do it? what do you do to change your life all the time? and ann said 'the first thing you do is go through all your closets and get rid of anything that doesn't fit your life any more. clear out the old to make space for the new' that's what it feels like i'm doing here.
i've only gotten a small start on things and everywhere i look i am completely dissatisfied with the state of any and all closets and cabinets. i see something in every corner and have the urge to pretty much throw away all of our possessions to make room for babe. and i want to CLEAN everything! the funny thing is i know this is definitely "nesting" but i didn't realize how strong the urge to do it would be. i actually feel pretty crummy and tired and yet i have the energy to tackle clearing out my shoes... a project i would usually ignore until another day. certainly there is a psychological component to this in that i KNOW that the baby is on her way and we'd like to be organized before she comes. at the same time i'm surprised at how very BIOLOGICAL this urge feels. it seriously comes from deep inside my bones and says: GET READY! it's going to happen! i guess its time to start sweeping out my cave and really making the space ready for this baby.

Dresser Project
Currently Craving: For the Love of Chocolate (yes, the whole store!)
Yesterday we did a "get Ready for Babe to come" project. we hauled the dresser that was in my room as a little girl out of the basement and into the backyard for a facelift.
Tyco came to help...
the BEFORE photo really doesn't reveal the amount of just plain dirt that was on the thing to be sure. Max described it to friends last night as "shabby chic... but more shabby than chic."
To get it cleaned up, Max decided to sand it with the hand-sander that he uses on the cars. luckily this seemed to work fine. our one hang up was that when he went to actually sand the dresser (not the drawers) it felt like the dresser was coated in wax. i called my dad to find out if he had any suggestions and he didn't know anything except a guess that it was covered in oil based paint. So max went back to work...
a little while later it was ready for painting. about that time my parents called to say they recommended using oil based paint because it had been 'antiqued' in the past with oil based paint. only, we didn't get that message because we were outside in the garage. instead we used latex paint and it seems to have done pretty well.
below is a slide show of the pictures of the project (i didn't want to fight blogger any more to get the photos up in the post) you can see tyco helping, the before pic, max hard at work and then the finished project. pretty sweet!

Nesting?
Currently Craving: Nothing, i just ate
A few weeks ago at the Packtastic Birthday Party i was talking with my cousin mary beth and she asked me if i am nesting yet. and i said no, not really. i have some lists of things to do but i really haven't done too much.
but that got me thinking.... maybe i should be nesting. or at least i should be working on those projects i hope to have finished before the Babe arrives. so after a week of pretty much laying around on my bum watching movies and eating to compensate for being the hostess with the mostess the week before, i finally got my act in gear to get re-started on projects that are halfway done at this point.
now, i am often told by others 'you are so organized' and i am ALWAYS surprised when people say this. is that really true? i don't think so. but this first project may prove me wrong. for the past few years i've had a subscription to Cooking Light magazine (which i highly recommend by the way) and i haven't thrown out a single issue. and i haven't tossed them because it's all good stuff with good ideas and we use them over and over. so this week i finished the project i started at least a month ago of tearing out our favorite recipes and others that looked good and putting them into plastic sheet protectors and organizing them into a binder. i really hate to admit that because even i think it sounds really anal. but it did free up a LOT of space in our pantry. the organization of the binders is awesome so now i can locate shrimp recipes and not bump into cookie recipes in the looking. and max actually complemented me several times on this task so i guess he doesn't think i'm insane with this project. i think it will make me happy. AND i figure when my mom comes after Babe is here we can just give her the binder and let her go to town. all of it will be good, all of it will be good for us, and she won't have to bake and bake and bake for us.
This is what our dining room table looked like during this project. i'm happy to say it's just about all cleared up now.
My other nesting task involves quilting. i started quilting one weekend when max was at the track and i had nothing to do. it was during our wedding planning phase. i was slightly obsessed with wedding planning (not in a bridezilla way, i think) and so i decided i needed a project that would go on past the wedding and i started making a quilt. since then i have completed two queen-sized quilts for friends who have gotten married and one crib one for my niece. Sadly, that first one i started is very close to being completed but isn't there yet. so now with Babe on the way i have some quilt projects i want to finish.... a queen quilt for another friend.... a wall hanging quilt for Babe's room.... that first quilt i started so i can get it done.... and i've recently bought fabric for a crib sized quilt for Babe. (yes, i know, no quilts actually covering her while she sleeps in a crib, that's what sleep sacks are for). At this point it could be possible to get them all done i think. the queen is going really quickly and in a moment of delusion this week while i was working i thought i might get it done this weekend but seeing as how i'm going to be social all weekend, not going to happen. The big hold up is the wall hanging because it's all applique and then really should be hand quilted for it to look beautiful. yeouch... that could take a while. so we'll see. i might have to send that out to someone professional to hand quilt it if i can get the top done quickly. since we are planning to use it in her room as a wall hanging asap i DO really need to work on it. hopefully it will come together eventually
This is what our guest room looks like when i take it over with quilting projects. on top are some squares from my friend's quilt and underneath is the stars and moons wall hanging quilt that will eventually hang in her room. hopefully.
as far as other nesting projects go. eh. not much yet. i got all my pictures from Bali last summer into a photo album. and otherwise we have ideas about what furniture we want. and we'll get to that eventually. we haven't started setting up a nursery yet. we've got houseguests spread through the summer and once that's done at the end of july then we can tear down the guest room and start making it baby central. until then i'll have to be satisfied with ridiculous organization projects and quilting until my back can't stand it any more.
