Summer Reading

Currently Craving: Still MORE Chocolate.

Monday will be Memorial Day, the unofficial start to summer. and for me that needs to mean summer reading. now, i've got a bit of yoga reading i'm supposed to do before my trip in June, and i've got plenty of preggo lady reading to do. but i need some serious chick lit. or at least something lighthearted and quick to get me through the next several months. preferably these will be books to get at the local library so i'll be forced to read quickly and return (so i'll be forced to sit down and read and not run around all over the place)

on my reading list for this summer:

Lady of the Snakes - i heard a review of this one on NPR the other day, sounded good

Eat, Pray, Love - well, i just always read this book, i might start it again tonight actually but that won't last too long

Little Earthquakes. and Yummy Mummy - both recommended as Mommy Chick Lit by the email i get from some website i've subscribed to.

And right now that's it. i am COMPLETELY open to suggestions. i tend to like: Biographies/Memoirs, fiction starring women with a good plot line, travel stories, and i don't mind a stupid quick read now and then but i like it to be sort of smart reading. i tend not to be so interested in books with multiple narrators (ie: poisonwood bible), mystery/detective stories etc.

so if you have any thoughts, all you smart women out there reading along, please send them my way. i am also open to classics.

i've recently read: time traveler's wife (loved it), love in the time of cholera, playing with boys, lipstick jungle, some sort of fiction by peter mayle, a walk in the woods, a year in the world, bel canto, the known world, the pact, (and LOTS of yoga and baby books) and i very much enjoy anything Tom Robbins.

Yes, i guess this is shameless use of the blog to further my own agenda and get my needs met, but dang it! why have a blog if you can't get advice from time to time. Suggestions happily accepted.

Well, I always enjoy the work of Charlaine Harris. She has four series of books based upon different heroines, but all women are very strong. Her books also have a great wit about them, even though they are definitely more on the fluffy than intellectual side of literature. They are a very quick read good for preggo brains though.

The following have been recommended to me but I haven't read any of them yet so I don't know what they are like:
Water for Elephants; Double-Bind; Glasshouse; and Beautiful Boy (supposed to be sad so you may want to stay away from that.)

This one will make you cry but is so wonderful--The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn parkhurst. Also, How to Be Lost by Amanda Eyre Ward. Love them.

I should say that both have their sad moments, but you will end them feeling joyful. OR, at least I did. :)
