lots of women i know like to share their birth stories and i do ask to hear them. actually, a lot of the maternity magazines have little blurbs about how to get strangers and even friends/family to STOP sharing if you don't want to hear a particular story... that's how popular it is to share about the birth experience. but i do think, why not? it is REALLY important in the life of a woman. and i'm all ears. pretty much what i've learned is that every birth is different, no matter how much the same you think they might be.
but i've found a funny common element. some how having Shaved Legs is very important when going to the hospital for birth. (i'm not sure what the homebirthers are thinking about this. probably lots of them are hippies and wouldn't bother to shave on a normal day.) but in two of the stories i've heard lately, stopping to shave the legs was much more important than rushing off to the hospital to have the baby. in one case the woman actually made her husband do it while also trying to pack the bags and the car (that baby was 10 days early). it's really a funny thing to me and not something i'd consider probably until the moment of truth and then i could TOTALLY see myself being concerned with the amount of hair on my legs. now i'm slightly paranoid about it and have been trying to keep things inline so i'm not caught having to have max shave for me before nancy arrives.
and, speaking of nancy arriving... something you have to consider with a homebirth but not a hospital birth is that state of your house! i know women get into nesting and probably most women have pretty clean houses when they bring the baby home because they've spent weeks cleaning every crack in the wall, but imagine the doctor coming to you. i just keep seeing all the dog fluff and weird dust in corners and things like that and hoping that i'll get that famous burst of energy before nancy comes and i'll clean it all up. she did say that when i go into early labor is NOT the time to start the cleaning. she said 'inevitably the night you go into labor is the night that you didn't straighten up before going to bed' so to her it doesn't matter i guess, and we're definitely going to be making even more of a mess.
so i guess it's just funny to me to be thinking of the dust in the corner of the room and whether there is a days growth of hair on my legs in the midst of the big picture of the fact that a Baby is going to be COMING OUT OF MY BODY pretty darn soon. oh how the mind does it's best to distract.
