So, Max has an iPhone. it's a little busted from riding around in his pocket all the time, but he does have an iPhone. and i don't know if you know the iPhone, but it has this feature where you can download (right out of the AIR!) all sorts of applications.. or "apps" for short. you just go to the page and download whatever you want. some are free and some you have to pay for. the apps are very important things you might need at any moment... like, um, the iFlute, the MORE COWBELL app, blackjack, poker... and any number of things to fill your time. shazam is one of our favorites as you can hold the phone in the air and it will pick up the music that is playing then tell you the name of the song and artist. nice.
as ridiculous as it all seems, on this last trip we actually found a very useful app. at max's grandparents house sabine was in an upstairs bedroom which is pretty far from the family room, definitely out of earshot. they don't have a baby monitor.. and neither do we.
iPhone app to the rescue! for a small fee max downloaded the iPhone baby monitor. we put his phone on monitor and set it in the room with sleeping baby. then left the room, taking my phone with us. any time his phone picked up a noise in the room it called my phone. it was just sensitive enough not to call for every sigh and cough but would call if she started to truly cry. pretty sweet. and, it really worked. we only got to use it for one nap because by the time i got her to sleep every night i just stayed in bed, but it was still pretty cool.
and i'm really not a gaget person, but using the iPhone was quite useful. and it saved us from having to spend money to buy a monitor, and saved us from having to own a big plastic baby monitor that will eventually end up in a landfill (i know, the phone will too and it's probably worse for the environment, but at least it serves more than one purpose). and we had piece of mind to be able to leave her out of earshot.
i think it could be pretty fun. if we wanted to we could put my mom's phone on for the iPhone to call and SHE could monitor the baby from out of town. oh the things they think of!
