The Diaper Thing

(Ok, so i haven't felt much like blogging lately.. it'll come back i'm sure)

anyways, i realized i never blogged about our final decision on diapering. i knew we didn't want to do disposable, but we did start there. i couldn't see starting with cloth or even with the gDiapers in the beginning. i mean, we were getting used to having to take care of another life, washing diapers seemed like too much to just jump into right away. but eventually, it started to wear on our souls. just looking at the piles of diapers in the trash and knowing they were just going to sit in the landfill made us wince. then when we were at wholefoods a saleswoman there told us for every baby... it's like a ton of disposable diapers right into the landfill. i don't think sabine's going to have any clean space left when she grows up. so we knew we needed to make the leap. but which way to go? gdiapers or cloth.
after testing both we decided on the cloth. the gs just don't seem as comfortable to her AND they don't feel as good or soft to the touch. i mean, i wouldn't want to put it on my bum. so instead we invested in about 20 of the bum genius 3.0 one-size pocket diaper. after the discussion we had with max's granny and velma we are so glad to know cloth diapers are NOT what they used to be. (velma talked about having to go outside in the cold to hand wash diapers back in the day... and the pain of safety pins, yuck!) these days the diapers are pretty sweet. the ones we have are pocket diapers which means there is an outer part that is a solid color on the outside and a soft white on the inside that goes next to sabine's skin. the part next to sabine's skin is made of wicking fabric so that she never feels wet. NEVER, even when she's soaked. then inside of the whole outer piece is a super absorbent insert that holds a ton of liquid. and the inside of the colored part is also lined so that the whole thing doesn't leak. the outer part has velcro tabs so it attaches just like a disposable. and it is adjustable so she should be able to wear it for the life of her diaper time.
i've told people a few times lately, max and i hardly even realize we're using them. it does mean some extra wash but we're doing extra wash anyways. so we tend to wash them with clean rinsing soap once in cold, once in hot then line dry to save on energy and because it's better for them. they dry.. we stuff the inserts back in, and we're good to go. no diaper rash ever. we haven't taken them traveling except for her to wear at night so far, but when we go to the beach for a week this summer i'm sure we'll take them.
the only downside (if it counts as one) is the cloth diaper booty. so it is slightly making it hard for her to roll herself over, she's kind of like a turtle caught on it's back. it also makes her clothes fit a little funny. so my thought is that they should make cloth-cut clothing for babies in cloth diapers. i also think someone should make onsies that say funny things like: 'check out my cloth diaper booty' and 'cloth diapered babies got back' stuff like that. otherwise, we couldn't be happier. it was the best when we changed to cloth at night and suddenly we never had to change a diaper in the dark again. instead of leaks and crying we got a dry happy baby.. still some crying but that's just because she loves us and wants to be near all the time.
so that's my suggestion. unfortunately, as i'm writing she's sleeping so i can't have her model them for you. maybe in a future post.
