max is away and it always seems that things go just ever so slightly awry when one or the other of us is away for any length of time. poor girl... one or the other of us is ALWAYS away it seems.
she has definitely learned 'No.' or, more accurately, she has learned to say no herself and that she will be respected if she says it. she also knows that if she isn't respected, crying is another option for getting things done. i guess parenting has begun....
today first saw a loud and spirited game of 'i don't want to nap, and you can't make me.' round 1 ended in a poopy diaper change, nursing and books all over again (point Sabine). round 2 was the hour long round which took up my yoga hour and finally finally ended in babe rolling over and sucking her thumb as she drifted off to sleep. (point MOM) sweet, we're all clear. tiptoe downstairs to do yoga.... 10 breaths in... RING RING. phone rings.... and then the loud and clear cry of an unhappy 1 year old ... round 3 and the entire match go to Sabine as i just give up. i don't have the energy to try again.
our next event 'i don't want to eat, and you can't make me.' this one less spirited but no less determined. it seemed that the only way she was going to eat was if she fed herself. she would not take anything off the spoon. she would only feed herself finger food and she refused to feed herself. i finally just walked out of the room since me being there didn't seem to help. once i was gone she was more than happy to feed herself plenty of the foods i'd been trying to get her to eat for the last 20 minutes.
the park was fine as long as i let her lead the way. and she decided today that walking is not nearly as much fun as being carried. (crawling is not even an option of course)
on to a repeat of our first event 'i don't want to nap and you can't make me' only this time MOM has the upper hand because it's 330 and sabine hasn't napped more than 15 minutes all day. back into the bed she goes. a spirited protest is made but she simply does not have the energy to sustain it and she finally drifts off.
sweet! creep downstairs to sit on my yoga mat. this time meditate first then get into whatever my body wants to do.
sitting. quiet. all trying to meditate. ..
TYCO.
Tyco walks right over my mat and starts sniffing all up in my face with his nasty doggie breath and proceeds to drip drool right on my mat while he pants and waits for me to pet him. ARG! OK DOG I WILL PET YOU!!! that's about the last straw i have after everything. but finally finally tyco leaves me alone, i finish my meditation. by this time i don't have a firey yoga practice in me anymore but i get to a deep hip opener practice. (probably just as good)
and just over an hour after she fell asleep sabine is up for another round of 'i'm a tired baby but that doesn't keep me from staying awake'. we spent the evening keeping her busy but not exhausted. keeping me busy but not exhausted too.
'i am hungry but won't eat' was attempted again but this time i just gave her the food and let her have at it. she seemed to like that better than MOM will feed you. then she demanded MY food and luckily today it was food that she could have so i was fine sharing.
bed time saw yet ANOTHER round of 'i'm exhausted but you can't make me sleep' which started as soon as the pajamas came out of the closet. into the bed she went and even though i crept out of the room while she was silent she let me know she was still awake and fighting by crying out several more times ... just long enough that i missed the one tv show i try to watch.
finally sleep. and complaining to the blog (sigh) hopefully there is some humor in this whole day. at least i find it funny sort of. i'm just hoping tomorrow goes a little differently.
so i guess this is what the pediatrician meant last week when she said "she may be small, but she sure is feisty, isn't she?'

Oh joy! And who says parenting isn't a full-time job! If it makes you feel better, I'm "parenting" a crew of 30 sweaty dudes!
Maybe she is ready for only one nap a day instead of two? I wondered that when I was last there. She is in that time when two is really needed but she only wants one. So you get through the AM and put her down for hopefully a long afternoon nap. Just a thought. love you
Cillian did that. He refused to nap at daycare, then bapped from about 1-5 pm. It was nice, except he only napped if I was laying with him, so the only thing I accomplished was reading. I am right there with you in the "My way or NO WAY" zone. Ciaran has always been like that with eating and is just beginning that with sleep. I guess I have also given up in that I just finish my computer browsing until he looks super tired, and then we go to nap together. Don't even get me started on the hours of tv we have DVRed... I hope things are back to normal for you!!
