The Mill Mountain Star was conceived as a Christmas decoration and marketing ploy. The Roanoke Chamber of commerce and merchants raised the money to build it and it was turned on Thanksgiving Eve, 1949
(11/23/1949). It is 60 years old today! All of this is according to an article in the Roanoke Times today celebrating the stars 60th birthday. I remember when they used to turn the star red when there was a traffic fatality! Then for a short time it was turned off when there was an energy shortage.
