Snowy Saturday

We were gifted this snowsuit when sabine was first born and to be honest i worried that we'd never use it. today we were lucky it was hanging in the basement just waiting for sabine to put it on and be a little pink stay puff marshmallow baby.

Snow in virginia is kind of a strange thing. it used to happen more often and be more severe, but in the 4.5 years we've lived in this house i remember two snows that actually closed schools and both were gone by the second day. (one of them was just march of this year) so it's a bit of a rare occasion for us to get snow and it is definitely cause for excitement.
yesterday when i'd heard it was going to snow i almost immediately did just what is programmed into me by being raised in the south... i RUSHED to the grocery store. much to my yankee husband's amusement i made sure to stock up on essentials and i think we're set for the next decade. in my defense, sabine really was almost out of yogurt and that still makes up at least 90% of her diet. plus, how could we have hot chocolate with no marshmallows?
so i think the running to the store thing is kind of a joke to northerners. they think we're crazy to do it. but the thing is, you DO NOT want to have to get in a car during or after a snowstorm if you can possibly help it. the reasons for avoiding driving are twofold. first, in virginia, especially eastern virginia, we are woefully underprepared for snow of any magnitude. we have like two plows for ever three counties and never enough salt or sand to go around. so there's no way that VDOT is keeping up with clearing roads. right our our front street is totally clear but the side street is a sheet of ice with snow underneath. the second reason to avoid driving is to avoid all the other idiots out there. we never see snow here so we never get the chance to learn how to drive in it so people either go way to slow or they think that because they have an SUV they are han solo rescuing luke in empire strikes back and they can take on anything. it's not true. max rolls his eyes and yells at the crazy drivers out there. and i admit i have NO IDEA what i'm doing if it comes to snow or ice driving. i'm happier inside with a good book or movie and that hot chocolate. so i make my trip to the store as soon as i can and then i hole up like a little bunny and wait for spring to thaw us out like the rest of the smart virginians. if you think we're crazy here, i understand. but at least i have enough eggs to get through the rest of the winter. sabine will be all set.

Ah...it's just like I was there for the blizzard of 09. :) And I love how Sabine reminds me of Randy, the younger brother from A Christmas Story in her puffy snow coat. :)
