so after the positive home pregnancy test i figured it was time to start taking this hormone production thing into my own hands... or my own mind and body as it were.
let me rewind and say to any of you who haven't been pregnant or had a wife who is pregnant or anything that what is supposed to be happening is that my body and the developing placenta (i know, i said placenta) are supposed to be creating HCG. Baby Hormone. Human Chorionic Gonadatropin. and the level of it is supposed to double every 72 hours and peak around 8 to 11 weeks of pregnancy. That's what the blood test is measuring. By having a measurement of 5 it is a positive test but it takes about a 25 for an absolute positive. and by week 5 (where i am starting tomorrow) you could have a score ranging anywhere from 18 to 7,000. (give or take a few thousand) this hCG stuff is what gives you the morning sickness and the irritability and mood swings. the general icks of the beginning of pregnancy.
those icks were what i wasn't feeling so much of on wednesday when i decided to get all proactive on this embryo.
first i started with physical manipulation in the form of shoulder stand. shoulder stand is a fabulous yoga pose which puts you upside-down on, you guessed it, your shoulders and you hang out there for a while, move your legs around some and then come down. the reason for this in my situation is that it stimulates the thyroid gland. and i'm not totally sure but i know the thyroid gland stimulates other glands and has a roll in hormone production and regulation. i figure it can't hurt to charge up my hormone production a little bit if it's dragging. so after a nice yoga practice in the morning i chilled for most of the day before teaching in the evening. (and no i didn't practice topless like the guy in the picture)then the mind/body work kicked in. on wednesday night when i couldn't sleep i decided to just tell this body and that placenta to get to work. so i put my hands over my abdomen and just told my body what to do. make the hormones, make the hormones.... and other variations on that theme.
the result. in the middle of the night i woke up not feeling so hot but not awful. and wouldn't you know it, all day thursday i felt run down and a little towards the pukey side. no vomit thankfully but i felt like i'd just started a cycle of the pill. more what i'd been expecting to feel like during pregnancy.
so then on friday it didn't stick around. so a little while ago i went back to work. another shoulder stand followed by an hour-long restorative practice. and while i'm resting in supta badakonasana (surely one of my all time favorite poses)< my hands are back on my abdomen breathing in love and energy breathing out creation of the hormone. and now, about 20 minutes later, i'm feeling slightly woosy and birth control pill-ish. so does the mind/body connection work? i'll say YES.and i do realize i'm probably the only woman on the planet who ever provoked her own pregnancy symptoms on purpose, but seriously, if i don't feel like i'm pregnant, i'm not sure i'll believe it.
