Currently Craving: Water
I'm on a list serve for the birth circle here in town. often times it's nothing interesting, but sometimes something good comes through.
yesterday someone sent a link to a news story by CBS about an 81 year old midwife who opened a clinic in DC. this is a pretty amazing story. the woman, Ruth Lubic, decided to serve the underserved in the heart of DC. she offers great prenatal care and as a result has seen major decreases in preterm births. apparently, she chose DC on purpose thinking that if she can change prematurity rates in DC she can use this model anywhere. AND because they aren't having to care for underdeveloped infants DC saves something like $1M a year!
midwifery sounds like the right model to me.

(as an aside, big LOVE to shannon and john as they go in to induce and have their baby today! HOORAY!)

Alas, we abandoned our mission to induce. The baby was too high to safely naturally augment by AROM, and the L&D was full to the hilt today (apparently uncharacteristically so), so walking and waiting and trying Pitocin was not an option. So, we are home again, baby still safely inside. Both the nurse and my OB said I would likely not make it through the weekend, but I am not that confident. My OB is out of town until Saturday night, so I am hoping that either the baby will stay in until then or that if he comes earlier then the on call doctor is willing to work with my preferences... oh well!!
