we sat on the deck with two dear friends that we never see enough of and talked for as long as we could stand it with the mosquitos nipping our ankles.
pasta fresh made by eight ready hands (passing the babe between them) in our own kitchen, boiled quickly and served with a little butter and garlic. salad and fresh herbs from their house and a homemade salad dressing. finished the meal with our homemade blackberry/strawberry crumble with ginger ice-cream (thanks to grandy for the inspiration on that one) and it is a night well spent.
we talked of house hunting (them) and sleep schedules (us). drank italian wine given to max and me as a wedding gift. somehow sabine was in an expansive and entertained mood the entire time. friends said good-bye and the kitchen was cleaned and were totally done by 8 pm. these days, i've just described the perfect evening.
Parenthood makes me feel old and young in the same instant. old through a child's eyes, certainly becoming the parent to another being means your own childhood is finished. no matter how young at heart you remain, becoming the parent means you are the responsible party. Young in that we've only been at this parenting thing for 10 months now. we are truly just in the infancy of it, so it's good that sabine is still a baby i guess.
there is an absolute sweetness to this young family time. hard to savor in the moment, but fleeting. sometimes i'm sad we only get 18 years with her. and only a year really of her as a baby, hardly seems enough.
so like all the flavors of that night i'll work hard to taste each delicious moment of our sweet baby time with Sabine, so that one day when i'm old i'll look back and remember the beauty of these quiet summer nights.
